McCain ne sera pas le candidat des Républicains ?
Scénario fantasmagorique, ou prémisse théorique d’un séisme politique ? Jour après jour, aux yeux de l’Amérique, John McCain ressemble de plus en plus à un Konstantin Chernenko républicain.
C’est ici que débute le scénario de Steve Rosenbaum : en septembre, au Congrès du parti Républicain, John McCain annoncera qu’il n’acceptera pas l’investiture du parti pour des raisons de santé, suite à quoi le parti en Congrès devra choisir un autre candidat pour la présidentielle. En créant ainsi l’événement, à deux mois de l’échéance électorale, le candidat choisi ne sera pas disséqué par la presse. L’effet de surprise serait donc le coup de la dernière chance. Toujours selon Rosenbaum, les candidats possibles pourraient être Condoleezza Rice, Colin Powell, Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, Bobby Jindal, Chuck Hagel, Michael Bloomberg… N’oublions pas que ces scénarios ont l’étrange habitude de ne jamais se réaliser.

Perhaps this is a good forum for me and my cause:
I am a proud Republican who does not bash anyone except extremists and those who victimize others.
I am sufficiently aware that the French contributed much to the founding of the United States, both philosophically and militarily, and I am truly grateful for their support. In addition, living in Alexandria, VA, a place Lafayette et al visited several times, gives me added advantage of appreciating the French influence on my country. Washington, DC is also an international capital (planned by a Frenchman) and the retort from the lady in the front of the theatre during Kagan’s diatribe in DC was a ‘diplomatic’ way of saying that his brand of humor was inappropriate. Please also note that I did not dignify Kagan’s jibes by repeating them.
Most Republicans are centrists/moderate. We embrace the free-market economy, equal economic opportunity, universal education, personal responsibility, and uphold the civil rights guaranteed to all Amerians under the Constitution (even if we disagree with some of the laws). You might want to look at the lives and records of Republican Senator Arlen Spector or my own Republican Senator John Warner.
Unfortunately, the squeaky wheel gets all the media attention, and our party has been ‘hijacked’ by the religious right. While I am a church-going Christian, I am not one that connects my faith directly to a political agenda.
However, bigotry and poor manners is not bounded by one particular party. I am sure that Andy Kagan is a liberal Democrat, (as are most comedians) and perhaps Craig Ferguson has registered as one. They both bash the French unmercilessly; it is simply shock-jocks pandering to the lowest denomination; most of their audiences are young Democrats.
So please learn about the moderate/centrist Republicans, which are the majority. You might also find that ‘Blue Dog Democrats’ will be voting for McCain.
And given the recent backroom dealings and negative comments by Clinton and Obama, concerning Canada and NAFTA, to their respective supporters I wouldn’t be placing either one on a pedestal vis a vis the French.

Anne-Marie, although I try to present a balanced view of American politics, my work at Miquelon.org makes it very hard for me to view Republicans in a positive light - except maybe for Chuck Hagel. French Bashing was a largely conservative / Republicain operation, and McCain himself made some rather derogatory comments about our country. Forgive yes, forget - hell no!

Forgive me for writing in English, but my comprehension is far better than my French grammar.
Obviously, this highly unlikely scenario is a fantasy of the Democrats. But stranger things could happen…and have. (Who would have thought Barak Obama would have toppled Hillary Clinton?)
John McCain is a fighter. John McCain is his own man; some say a ‘loose cannon’ (there must be a great French idiom for that.). He has stood up to his party, the President, some special interest groups, and has been able to work in a bi-partisan manner. He is not a political hack.
There are some Republicans like me, with a Libertarian streak, that admire this. No one candidate will satisfy all the members of a political party or country - especially in this vast nation with such diversity in ethnicity, faith, economic background, and regions. He is far more like Harry S. Truman, who was also unpredictable and didn’t suffer fools gladly.
After eight years of a President who has known and learnt nothing about foreign affairs and the military, I think the world, our troops fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the people of the Middle East deserve an American President with experience as well as a leader who has traveled extensively, met with heads of state (pronouncing their names properly), and spent time with our troops abroad.
Obama just doesn’t cut it; he has yet to even visit Iraq or Afghanistan, but has a lot of rhetoric about it. Even Senator Clinton had visited a couple of times during the time Obama was in the Senate.
McCain also has two sons in the military.
Therefore, this Republican is praying for his continued good health as well as a good Vice Presidential choice…just in case!
